The School of Transportation originates from the Naval Architecture Section of National Maritime Vocational School established in 1946. After liberation of Wuhan in 1949, Zhongnan School of Transportation was established on the foundation of the National Maritime Vocational School, and Naval Architecture Section evolved into Naval Architecture Department. With the Countrywide Adjustment of Schools and Departments of Universities in 1952, the department of Naval Architecture was transferred to Shanghai Jiao Tong University. With the development of national economy, the Department of Naval Architecture was recovered and reconstructed in Wuhan in 1958. In 1963, due to the course adjustment among the universities affiliated to the Ministry of Communications, the Department of Naval Architecture of Dalian Maritime University was transferred to Wuhan and was combined with our university, and the new Department of Naval Architecture was established. After 1978, to meet to the development of shipbuilding industry, successive bachelor degree programs have been set up, such as Ship Design and Architecture, Ship Technology and Equipment, Ship Structural Mechanics, Ship Hydrodynamics, Ship Trade, Ship Inspection and so on.
The Department of Road and Bridge Engineering originates from the Department of Civil Engineering of the Zhongnan School of Transportation in 1949，which consisted of three majors: Civil Engineering, Bridge Engineering and Mechanical Automation. Due to the Countrywide Adjustment of Schools and Departments of Universities in 1952，the above three majors were transferred to Hunan University, Huanan Institute of Technology and Jiangxi University, respectively. In 1988, the Department of Civil Engineering was recovered and the major of Highways and Urban Road was set up, which was renamed as Traffic and Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering, Road and bridge and River-cross Engineering.
The Department of Transportation Management originates from the majors of Water Transportation Management and Water Transportation Economics in Wuhan River Transport School after the Countrywide Adjustment of Colleges and Departments of Universities in 1952. As the course adjustment among the universities affiliated to the Ministry of Communications in 1963, the above tow courses were transferred to Shanghai Maritime University.
Wuhan Institute of Water Transport Engineering established the Management Department in 1982，and launched cadre courses of transportation management. Then, the undergraduate enrollment of Water Transportation Management was recovered in September 1983. In 1992，Wuhan Institute of Water Transport Engineering amalgamated with Wuhan River Transport School, and their majors of Water Transportation Management were combined and renamed as Transportation Management. The Department of Transportation Management was established.
In 1999, the Department of Naval Architecture and the Department of Civil Engineering were merged into the School of Ship and Civil Engineering. The majors of Ship Design and Architecture, Ship Technology and Equipment, Ship Trade, Ship Inspection were merged and renamed as the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean engineering. The Ship Structural Mechanics and Ship Hydrodynamics were merged with Mechanics, and then renamed as Engineering Mechanics. The two majors were separated from the department of Naval Architecture and a new Department renamed as Structural Engineering was established. In 2001，the School of Ship and Civil Engineering was merged with the Department of transportation Management and evolved into the School of Transportation.
In 2001，the Department of Transportation Management launched the major of Traffic Engineering and the undergraduate enrollment. According to the development of subjects, the major of Traffic Engineering was separated from the Department of Transportation Management in 2004, and Department of Traffic Engineering was established.
In 2012, on the basis of teachers from fluid mechanics laboratory and part of Department of Naval Architect Engineering, Department of Ocean Engineering was set up to strength the development of the field of Ocean engineering of the school. In 2013, the original Engineering Mechanics renamed as Port & Waterway and Coastal Engineering. In 2014, the Department of Structural Engineering was renamed as the Department of Port & Waterway and Structural Engineering.
There are 199 staffs in the school, including 42 professors, 59 associate professors, 41 lecturers and 27 laboratory technicians. The school has 1 National Youth 1000 Plan Expert, 1 provincial 100 Plan Expert, 2 Chutian Scholars, 30 doctoral supervisors, 5 senior experimentalists. There are 1 fellow of Discipline Appraisal Group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, 3 members for Committee of Experts of ISSC, and 3 fellows of Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education.
The School has 3 primary disciplines (Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Mechanics, Traffic Engineering), 5 undergraduate programs, 10 doctor and master programs, 3 post-doctoral research stations. The School has scientific research platforms such as the Key Laboratory of High-performance Ships Technology of Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Roads and Bridges and Structural Engineering of Hubei Province, the Laboratory Center for Teaching, and so on.
To meet the demand of society for talent cultivation and technology advancement, a new development objective is set for the School of Transportation, which will be achieved through the measures known as DRIVE.
